SUSTAINABLE MANUFACTURING

An Urgent Need

We talk about Recycling, Biodegrading and Composting but at the end of the day we need to be Sustainable.

Plastic is a wonderful material for mankind, but when it is used for low cost, disposable, single use products it becomes very destructive to both Man and Beast, both Terrestrially and Aquatically.

It is therefore important that these products be replaced by organic materials that can decompose back to basic nutrients that becomes one with the earth and feeds the soils and organisms.

The way to do this is to replace the plastic with Biodegradable or Compostable substitutes. One practical, real life way is to replace Plastic Lined Cups with Corn Starch Lined Cups.

Dartpac has achieved this and currently manufactures Biodegradable Paper Cups – Cups made from Paper and lined with Corn Starch (PLA).

To ensure customer awareness and certainty about the product, the following is a summary outlining the standards to which our Paper Cups conform thus cementing Dartpac’s claim that it’s products are Compostable in an attempt to make life on earth Sustainable.

Firstly, it is important to note that nothing will Compost if it is not subject to the correct conditions and that landfill sites do not allow for composting/biodegrading, in fact all that landfill sites do is “MUMMIFY” the product.

Dartpac’s cups will compost in Industrial Composting facilities. Today, these facilities range from Municipal units to Small Commercial units to Household units. The standards to which Dartpac’s Cups conform is summarised as follows:

  1. All Coated Paper used is certified by the BPI (Biodegradable Products Institute)
  2. All Coated Paper used is subject to the ASTM6868 and ASTM6400 standard which certifies disintegration/composing within 12 weeks.
  3. All Coated Paper used is subject to the ASTM6868 and ASTM6400 which certifies that 90% of all organic carbon in the coated paper is converted to Co2 (carbon dioxide) in 180 days ie, it biodegrades.
  4. All Coated Paper used is subject to the ASTM6868 and ASTM6400 which certifies that the materials used is of “natural origin” and that their carbon comes from biobased sources – in our case wood fibre and corn starch.
  5. All Coated Paper used is subject to the ASTM6868 and ASTM6400 which certifies that it supports Plant Growth and that it must not be less than 90% effective in Plant Germination rate when compared to other natural composts.
  6. All Coated Paper used is coated with PLA supplied by Ingeo Natureworks. This PLA is certified to be free of Genetically Modified Organisms  (GMO’s) by Eurofins GeneScan, a European certification body recognised as the leading authority for testing food, feed and raw materials.
  7. All Printed designs are printed using water-based inks and water-based varnishes on paper which is recyclable, compostable and biodegradable.
