Our JourneyRecyclability. Biodegradability. Compostability. All amazing words but how do we get there? We believe that the journey toward sustainability requires imagination in every industry field. One could call it 'imaginability'.
Traditionally paper cups were made with a plastic waterproof lining which was not recyclable. At Dartpac we produce disposable paper cups from compostable material lined with biodegradable natural corn starch (PLA). The corn starch and cellulose in the paper are digestible by microbes present in industrial composting units. So far so good. However we still generate waste: Paper off-cuts and production excess that requires disposal. To address this we engaged our moulded fibre division producing cup carriers fed from the waste of our cup production. In this way we've furthered our sustainability efforts to include internal recycling. The next problem we faced was the single use plastic sip lid. The solution was to make a sip lid out of paper fibre. This was possible thanks to our experience with moulded fibre cup carriers. The result is a totally new compostable sip lid made from recycled plant material.
This is where we are today, but what about tomorrow? That will depend upon our imagination and commitment in the journey toward sustainability. |
